Material Specification

Stainless Steel

In metallurgy, stainless steel is defined as an iron-carbon alloy with a minimum of 10.5% chromium content. The name originates from the fact that stainless steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel. This material is also called corrosion resistant steel when it is not detailed exactly to its alloy type and grade, particularly in the aviation industry. As such, there are now different and easily accessible grades and surface finishes of stainless steel, to suit the environment to which the material will be subjected in its lifetime

Mild Steel

These trade terms are often used interchangeably to describe standard carbon steels used for structural purposes, a typical example being AS3679 grade 250 or grade 300.

The term ‘mild steel’ is also applied commercially to carbon steels not covered by standard specifications. Carbon content of this steel may vary from quite low levels up to approximately 0.3%. Generally, commercial ‘mild steer’ can be expected to be readily weldable and have reasonable cold bending properties but to specify ‘mild steel’ is technically inappropriate and should not be used as a term in engineering.

Galvanised Steel

Hot dipped zinc steels are a versatile range of materials. Cutting, blanking, press braking, roll forming can all be carried out provided the right grade of hot-dipped zinc coated steel is chosen. For standard flashings and brackets Z1 with a 275g/m2 coating sufficient. Where aggressive environment exists, (e.g. gutters) thicker coatings are available, mainly 600g/m2.

Fabricolor - Powder Coated Aluminium

Architectural Powder Coating is a specialist process, which enables a colour stable coating to be applied to metal components. The advanced technology gives a single coat finish the provides a robust, durable coloured coating with a life expectancy up to 25 years. Architectural powder coatings offer a wide range of bright colours here a few examples.

Fabricolor - Anodised Aluminium

Anodising is an electrolytic process that deposits a chemically stable oxide layer on the surface of the treated alumninium. The exterior finish is a 25 micron film thickness. The resultant oxide film is thicker and stronger that aluminium's natural oxide covering. It is hard, porous, transparent and is an integral part of the aluminium so it will not peel or flake off. Once deposited the oxide film can be coloured to one of a small range of colours.
